On Tuesday, the Certification Commission for Health IT announced that it is shutting down all operations, Health Data Management reports.
Background
In 2004, three health IT associations -- including the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the American Health Information Management Association -- came together to create CCHIT to provide services for health IT products and educate health care providers and IT developers (Slabodkin, Health Data Management, 10/28).

Healthcare IT won't save healthcare industry, and other lettters
By Modern Healthcare | November 1, 2014
In response to the recent guest commentary “ICD-10 won't help on cost control”, the elephant in the room is much larger than the author suggests.
ICD-9 currently fails to provide accurate code diagnostic options for the patients I see in a medical practice. ICD-10 with its 69,000 codes still fails to provide options for accurate diagnosis. Thus, almost all patients are assigned both an incorrect and incomplete diagnosis of their medical condition.
In the world of medicine, new complexities, new diagnoses and new procedures are reported on a daily basis. Outcome measures are an attempt to relate the treatment to the disease, but in reality are seldom validated and almost never include all the variables that can alter outcomes. Because of the constantly changing understanding of disease, coding systems and their codes are years behind reality. Imprecise, inadequate codes give a completely inaccurate assessment of the actual activity and of the potential value (worth) of that activity.

At the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives' 2014 Fall CIO Forum this week, stakeholders said the policy agenda for health care CIOs is focused around meaningful use, cybersecurity, ICD-10 and patient safety, Healthcare IT News reports.
Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health records can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.
Forum Details
During the forum, Jeff Smith -- vice president of public policy at CHIME -- said Medicare penalties under the meaningful use program, which are scheduled to start in 2015, are the most important issue for CHIME.

ICD-10 Implementation Delay Gives Clinicians Time To Reduce Potential Headaches #ICD10 #ICDRemediator #ICD10Matters #HealthIT
Anesthesiology News - ICD-10 Implementation Delay Gives Clinicians Time To Reduce Potential Headaches
Chicago—The mandatory implementation deadline for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) coding system has been moved back from Oct. 1, 2014, to Oct. 1, 2015, easing pressure on clinicians who have not yet started the change. But this may be the only opportunity to catch up. For clinicians who continue to delay, there is strong potential for chaos and perhaps lost income from a poorly planned transition.
“It is fairly simple: If you are not billing with ICD-10 codes for services provided on or after October 1, 2015, you will not be paid,” said David Harano, MBA, executive director of Gastro One, a large gastroenterology practice in Germantown, Tenn. Speaking at 2014 Digestive Disease Week (DDW), Mr. Harano warned that implementation of ICD-10 codes “will cost you” in more staff hours for billing and perhaps less time with patients. All the potential problems are likely to be magnified with a head-in-the-sand approach, he added.

Picking up where I left off yesterday, here's a recap of information gathered from the exhibit hall during MGMA's annual conference earlier this week.
As you'll see, vendors are keying in on analyzing and automating the claims management process on the business side of small and midsize practices. On the professional side, they continue to look for ways to attract and engage physicians in community discussions, and encourage contact with colleagues.

[Whitepaper Excerpt] The ICD-10 Transition
Posted on Oct 31, 2014 9:00:00 AM
The following is an excerpt from our whitepaper, The ICD-10 Transition: How to Properly Deal with the Extension.
Excerpt-The-ICD-10-Transition-WhitepaperDealing with mandated change can be frustrating in any industry, and the government’s latest extension for transitioning to ICD-10 is no exception.
Now that we have until October 1, 2015 (September 30th) to make the switchover, it’s important to use this time wisely. Healthcare providers that fail to take advantage of the one-year delay will be doing themselves a disservice.
Becoming proficient now in ICD-10 brings the prospect of improving staff productivity and ensuring that the correct data is transmitted to payers in an effort to reduce - if not eliminate - rejections while helping to more specifically define diagnoses.

On Oct. 31, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a final rule that will update payment policies and rates under the End-Stage Renal Disease Prospective Payment System (PPS) for renal dialysis services furnished to beneficiaries on or after Jan. 1, 2015. This rule also introduces new quality and performance measures to improve the quality of care by outpatient dialysis facilities treating patients with ESRD and implements the Affordable Care Act mandate to use competitive bidding rates for durable medical equipment.
"Provisions in these rules are helping to move our health care system to one that values quality over quantity and focuses on reforms such as measuring for better health outcomes, focusing on disease prevention, helping patients live successfully at home, helping manage and improve chronic diseases and fostering a more efficient and coordinated health care systems, CMS said in a release.
