Is your facility prepared for ICD-10 transition?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a rule finalizing October 1, 2015 as the new compliance date for health care providers, health plans, and health care clearinghouses to transition to ICD-10.  Preparing a facility for ICD-10 coding transition is a vast undertaking, which requires planning and team work from all facility clinicians, coders, and staff.  This transition will affect the coding used by all healthcare providers.  CRNAs should familiarize themselves with the coding changes, be aware of the steps their facility is undergoing, and be part of the transition team, ensuring anesthesia representation.  Below are resources which can help a facility prepare for ICD-10 transition.

Less Than One Year to ICD-10; Will you be ready? : In the Trenches

Friday Oct 31, 2014

There are few topics in health policy that I am hesitant to discuss, but today’s topic is one of them. Lucky for me, there is probably an ICD-10 code for “scared to discuss ICD-10 codes, initial encounter.”

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system has been a part of our national health care system since 1979. Although the implementation of ICD-9 wasn’t without resistance, it was mild compared to the collective negative reaction received to ICD-10. ICD-10 is one of those issues that symbolize what many physicians consider to be the “over-regulation” of the U.S. health care system.

This collection of codes is fascinating to those that study and write about our health care system, but they are costly and of questionable value to those that actually provide patient care. In a world of “paying for value,” ICD-10 seems to miss the mark in the minds of most physicians.

Why Your Medical Practice Should Already be Training on ICD-10 #ICD10 #ICDRemediator #ICD10Matters #HealthIT

Why Your Medical Practice Should Already be Training on ICD-10-MDeverywhere

October 30, 2014/in MDe Insights /by MDeverywhere

Mastering the complexity and granularity of the ICD-10 will require a tremendous amount of study and practice. Starting now will give physicians and practice teams the needed time to prepare at a steady and reasonable pace.  The ICD-10-CM revision includes more than 68,000 diagnostic codes, compared to 13,000 in ICD-9-CM. In addition, ICD-10-CM includes twice as many categories and introduces alphanumeric category classifications for the first time.

The better educated and trained everyone is, the more likely the transition will be a smooth one without the significant reductions in productivity and – potentially – cash flow.  Starting now will help your practice avoid the sort of panicked cramming that is likely to lead to chaos on October 1, 2015.

How should health care organizations recover from the ICD-10 delay?

How health care organizations should recover from ICD-10 delay

When the date of the ICD-10 implementation was pushed back to Oct. 1, 2015, last March, many health care organizations felt the heavy impact of the delay. Although it was good news for smaller practices that had not yet fully prepared for the new codings of ICD-10, larger hospitals and organizations that had already spent significant amounts of time and money to code their procedures were left trying to figure out what to do with the lost time they had spent. Many hospitals and practices also underwent time-consuming efforts to audit the ICD-10 to check for accuracy.

ICD-10 and Meaningful Use Preparedness Woes | Phoenix Health Systems

By Andrea Steffes-Tuttle

New survey results illustrate the lack of ICD-10 preparedness.

This month, the Healthcare Billing and Management Association (HBMA) surveyed industry members to investigate progress towards ICD-10 readiness.

Highlights of the survey findings are:

Respondents have an increased confidence in their ability to handle both ICD-9 and ICD-10 concurrently.

23 percent of respondents report that system updates aren’t complete and it appears that internal testing is still lagging.

Only 27 percent report successful end-to-end testing.

83 percent expect that end-to-end testing won’t be available until sometime in 2015.

Coding Tips to Ease the Move to ICD-10 | #ICD10 #ICDRemediator #ICD10Matters #HealthIT

Coding Tips to Ease the Move to ICD-10 | Amphion Medical Solutions

Making the leap to ICD-10 is a challenge for even the most experienced coder. With eight times the number of codes in ICD-9 and requiring a greater understanding of anatomy and physiology, achieving and remaining proficient in ICD-10 requires intensive training and ongoing practice while the industry waits out the latest implementation delay.

For this reason, Amphion has launched “ICD-10 Tips,” a periodic series of detailed information around some of ICD-10’s more complex codes. Each tip includes useful information about the code in question such as sample usage or clarification.  For example, Tip #1 focuses on body part specificity—in particular that the PCS index does not contain the same specificity of body parts for all root operations—and provides examples including indexing. Tip #5 is focused on Xenograft and includes the definition, uses and device value.

Chief health IT czar DeSalvo will also do HHS public health job | Modern Healthcare

DeSalvo will juggle ONC chief, HHS posts

By Joseph Conn  |  November 1, 2014

The nation's chief health information technology officer will continue to serve in that role while also helping lead HHS' public health efforts, including its response to the Ebola virus outbreak, according to an official government blog.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell last month appointed Dr. Karen DeSalvo, who is head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, to serve as acting assistant secretary of health, effective immediately. Lisa Lewis, a lawyer who was ONC's chief operating officer, was named acting ONC coordinator.

But according to HealthITBuzz, the ONC's official blog, DeSalvo will serve as acting assistant secretary “while maintaining her leadership of ONC.” The blog said DeSalvo “will continue to work on high-level policy issues at ONC, and ONC will follow the policy direction that she has set.”
