Improve Information Governance with a Quick Assessment

The world of healthcare IT is rapidly changing and CIOs are finding that traditional governance models are not sustainable in the “fee for value” world.
Too often today we hear from both CIOs and clinical leaders that IT is operating in a silo and not well aligned with the emerging needs of the organization. Meaningful use and ICD-10 projects are good examples.

Eligible providers are in the midst of preparing for two important milestones as far as their health IT is concerned. Fortunately for eligible hospitals and professionals, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have given them greater flexibility withmeaningful use and Congress gave them a one-year reprieve from completing the transition to ICD-10.

The Tortoise and the Hare Approach to ICD-10

The Tortoise and the Hare Approach to ICD-10

The recent Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) survey results confirm what everyone watching this race to ICD-10 already knows. The proactive and mostly larger groups, facilities, and practices are proceeding full steam ahead for the Oct. 1, 2015 implementation date.
The rest of the world is either taking a wait-and-see approach or moving forward slowly, if at all. Vendors and payors seem to be making progress also, although there are still significant variations among them. Ironically, these findings are very similar to what the industry reported two years ago, and again last year. So why haven’t the ICD-10 delays resulted in everyone being “ready?” Why do some continue to procrastinate? Why does the readiness divide between those leading the race and those lagging far behind remain?

Recently I had the privilege of attending the National Association of Healthcare Quality’s Annual Educational Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Not surprisingly, I found myself sitting in on the presentation titled “Making Sense of your Data After ACA and ICD-10.”
As a health information management (HIM) professional working in multiple settings, including clinical documentation and ICD-10, I understand and am quite passionate about the overlap between data integrity and quality outcome reporting. I was very interested in what would be presented from “the other side of the fence,” which we refer to in the HIM world as “the quality world.” The session was presented well and was extremely informational; however, I walked away with a gnawing feeling of unrest that there still exists too much separation of these two worlds.

Most small-to-medium medical practices are struggling just to keep up with the changes taking place in healthcare today.
As I work with larger hospital systems and small-to-large physician practices, I can see that the challenges associated with moving toward ICD-10 implementation are most daunting for the small physician practice. Large hospitals and physician practices typically have the resources necessary to get ready for ICD-10, but what about the smaller practices? Many do not have the staff or resources.

The HIM group continues to work to prevent further implementation delays.
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) kicked off its 2014 conference in San Diego with a call to arms regarding ICD-10.
This summer, AHIMA launched an advocacy campaign urging its membership to make their voices heard in Washington. As part of this campaign, members have sent more than 7,000 letters to members of Congress and their staff, and made more than 10,000 phone calls. The message, according to HealthData Management: No more delay
