Talking Epic Systems, Ebola and ICD-10 at AHIMA

Don Fluckinger and Shaun Sutner analyze the week's stories in health IT, discussing Epic Systems, Ebola, health data governance, interoperability.

This is the latest "HIT Squad" podcast, in which Shaun Sutner and Don Fluckinger discuss the major health IT stories of the last week.

Advancing the cause of data governance, preparing yet again for the advent of ICD-10, and getting ready for a second and more serious round of HIPAA audits -- these health IT hot topics were at the forefront of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) 2014 annual convention and exhibit in San Diego. The conference of health information managers in sunny Southern California was just ending as the deadly Ebola virus burst into the U.S. and exploded into a health IT controversy in the person of Thomas Duncan, a Liberian who was the first victim to be diagnosed with -- and die from -- the virus in the United States.

Preparing For ICD-10 & DSM-5: What Your Organization Needs To Know To Successfully Make The Switch

Hear insights and best practices for preparing to make the switch to ICD-10 and DSM-5 from Netsmart's Director of Project Management, Dru Anne Walz, during this special online web briefing scheduled for October 30th at 2:00 PM EDT

GETTYSBURG, Pa., Oct. 14, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Major changes in diagnosis terms and codes could impact service delivery and revenue cycles for health and human services providers not preparing now to make the conversion.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), was released in May 2013 and adoption varies state by state. In addition, the deadline for providers to convert to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) code sets used to report clinical diagnoses and procedures is October 1, 2015. These conversion requirements present unique challenges to executives as well as clinical, IT, and billing managers in provider organizations.

ICD-10 would help US better track Ebola - FierceHealthIT

ICD-10 would help US better track Ebola

If Congress had not pushed back the deadline for implementing ICD-10 last spring, the United States now would have a specific code for tracking Ebola, according to an infographic from the Coalition for ICD-10 published at HIT Consultant.

As the only industrialized nation still using ICD-9, the disease is classified as 078.89, Other specified diseases due to viruses, a designation used for multiple viral diseases that have not been assigned a specific code. In ICD-10, it would have its own code A98.4, Ebola.

Improved revenue outcomes start with the patient

Patients are now responsible for closer to 30 to 35 percent of their healthcare bill

As reimbursements shrink and value-based payment models take shape, healthcare providers are realizing they must create and sustain a more effective revenue cycle to ensure long-term viability.
After being pushed to the back burner due to electronic health record adoption, meaningful use achievement, ICD-10migration and other clinical & regulatory initiatives, the revenue cycle is now surfacing as a high priority for organizations that want to maintain a healthy business. To remain competitive, providers must closely evaluate the current state of their revenue cycle and implement improvement opportunities.

Swedish medical center is taking the ICD-10 delay in stride

With the transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) delayed another year, healthcare organizations such as Swedish Medical Center are using the extra time to focus on detailed implementation and quality assurance measures. The postponed date has posed problems for healthcare systems that hired personnel and reallocated resources in advance of the original fall 2014 adoption date.
