Republican “reboot” senators still gunning for meaningful use

Posted by: ShaunSutner

They haven’t gone away.

The six Republican senators who unleashed a manifesto last year questioning the basic tenets of meaningful use, HIPAA enforcement and even the efficacy of electronic health records are still hanging around Capitol Hill.
Indeed, their 27-page “Reboot” tract will form the basis for a closed-door meeting during next week’s National Health IT Week between the senators’ policy staffers and College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) members and leadership and policy experts.

Ahead of CHIME's 2014 Fall CIO Forum in San Antonio, speakers dish to SearchHealthIT about what's keeping them up at night.

For Daniel Barchi, senior vice president and CIO of the Yale School of Medicine at Yale University and the Yale-New Haven Health System, good health IT policy doesn't always come down to money.

Shellshock & Why EHRs Need Updating - #ICD10 #ICDRemediator #ICD10Matters #HealthIT

Shellshock & Why EHRs Need Updating - InformationWeek

Shellshock & Why EHRs Need Updating

Nearly half of all security breaches occur in healthcare, and outdated medical records systems make data more vulnerable. An up-to-date EHR system can help solve security concerns, save money, and improve patient care.

Healthcare IT systems are ripe for security breaches. Medical records are especially data-rich, and thus are coveted in the circles within which stolen information is circulated. As a point of comparison, while the going rate for an illegally obtained credit card number is a few dollars, a stolen medical record can frequently be sold for upwards of $50.

EHR, ICD-10 and Healthcare
By Andres Jimenez, MD
When it comes to healthcare I wear many hats that have broadened my perspective on the transformation we are currently experiencing in this industry.
On most days I lead a physician training software company, on others I care for patients as a physician, and in yet others I mentor about a hundred high school children each year who dream of becoming doctors one day. This past month I put on a hat I haven’t worn in some time, having accompanied two family members on two separate ER visits varying from a simple fracture to an unfortunate death.  I was impressed by the care delivered in these two very different ER settings and care scenarios.  I always try to reflect on my experiences across these varying roles, frequently centering myself on the perspective of a very important stakeholder in healthcare, physicians.

World Health Organization: Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Publish Date:

Story:

IUPsyS is psychology’s international organization in Official Relations with the WHO and these were renewed in January 2014.   In this capacity IUPsyS was appointed to the International Advisory Group (IAG) for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders in 2006 and Secretary General, Dr Ann Watts, currently represents the Union on the IAG. Psychology’s contributions to the development of ICD-11 remain a key IUPsyS strategic priority.  To support this important initiative the IUPsyS has seconded psychologist Dr Geoff Reed to the WHO to serve as Senior Project Officer for the Mental and Behavioural Disorders component of the ICD-10 revision.  In this capacity Dr Reed reports to the Director of the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Dr Shekhar Saxeena, and Dr Pierre Ritchie, Co-Main Representative (Psychology) to WHO.  Dr Reed’s work at WHO has been suported by major grants  from the American Psychological Association (APA) to IUPsyS (2008-12; 2013-14;2015-6).  The Agreement for the 2015-16 grant was signed in Paris in July by IUPsyS Secretary General, Dr Ann Watts, and APA CEO, Dr Norman Anderson.  Institutional support for the revision process has also been provided by, for example, the University of Ottawa.

ICD-10 now 1 year away, many ODs unprepared

Don’t leave it to your staff—learn and prepare for ICD-10 before it’s too late

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) code is scheduled for implementation in the U.S. on Oct. 1, 2015—less than a year from now. Many optometric practices will likely be unprepared and therefore at risk for serious claim-filing and cash flow problems, according to Rebecca Wartman, OD, the American Optometric Association's (AOA) point person on ICD-10.
“I do not think that ODs have spent enough time on ICD-10 yet,” Dr. Wartman told Optometry Times. “Most practices do not have a formal plan for transition. And many ODs are totally relying on their staff to do this for them or their EHRs to handle ICD-10—both not great ideas.”

The ICD-10 mandate may be delayed another year, but providers and EHR vendors shouldn’t view the reprieve as an opportunity to relax. Building an ICD-10 bridge should be a top priority at every practice.

HIMSS Analytics: CAC Tools Slated for Growth Ahead of ICD-10

Author  | Date October 21, 2014

Computer assisted coding (CAC) applications are becoming increasingly popular in hospitals as healthcare organizations gear up for ICD-10, according to the latest HIMSS Analytics Essentials of the US Hospital IT Market report.  Of the 25 types of support service applications and technologies profiled in the report, CAC showed the most significant growth potential as hospitals start to feel the imminence of October 1, 2015.
“In preparation for the shift to ICD-10, it is no surprise that the sales potential for coding solutions is high,” said Lorren Pettit, Vice President of Market Research for HIMSS Analytics. “The findings suggest that market opportunities are ripe for vendors with Computer Assisted Coding solutions.”
