Volunteer for a Study on Strategic Value of ICD-10

The AHIMA Foundation is seeking members who have dual-coded data to participate in a research study on the strategic value of ICD-10.  The study will analyze dual coded data for patient encounters to examine where there is increased granularity for diagnoses and procedure show the increased granularity of ICD-10 codes provides additional for new insights for ICD-9 data to support healthcare reform initiatives, and the potential impact on hospital readmissions, complications, risk adjustment systems and more.

ICD-10 readiness not there in SearchHealthIT and CHIME survey

Health information managers and a CMIO who looked at a SearchHealthIT-CHIME survey of more than 300 healthcare groups said the biggest surprise is the lack of ICD-10 readiness.

Healthcare information and technology specialists who looked at a survey on the impact of the ICD-10 delay found it interesting how many healthcare organizations still aren't ready for the new coding system six months after Congress postponed its introduction until late 2015.

A key finding of the summer 2014 SearchHealthIT survey of more than 300 healthcare organizations -- conducted with the College of Healthcare Management Executives (CHIME) -- was that only 10.7% of the respondents said they were fully ready for ICD-10, though a total of 71.8% reported they were in various states of ICD-10 readiness.

Decision to delay ICD-10 received with mixed feelings from physicians

Read why providers should act now and not stall their ICD-10 implementation plans just because the deadline was extended another year.

The decision to delay the ICD-10 deadline another year -- signed into law as part of the bill H.R. 4302 -- has drawn varied reactions from the healthcare industry. The bill, also known as the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014, also contained temporary relief for the sustainable growth rate formula that would have caused physicians to see significant cuts to their Medicare reimbursements.

The ruling to delay ICD-10 was welcomed by some and disappointing for others. To those with whom I spoke who are involved with the ICD-10 initiative in one of Charlotte, N.C.'s largest health systems, the delay means that the current project outline and the timelines for all other tasks must be adjusted. While it will be helpful for many to have some additional time to test and address any issues that crop up, some are not confident the delay will provide any value to those who planned ahead.

SearchHealthIT survey results show varied responses, and measures the financial impact of delaying ICD-10 until 2015.

As varied as one can imagine the providers in the U.S. healthcare system, so is the impact of Congress's forcing CMS to levy an ICD-10 delay. While some welcome the extra time, others find Congress's gambit onerous in cost and inconvenience, according to survey results conducted over six weeks in July and August.

The SearchHealthIT reader survey, in cooperation with the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) drew 326 responses, 269 of them were IT workers at healthcare providers as well as 57 more from payers and accountable care organizations.

Republican “reboot” senators still gunning for meaningful use

They haven’t gone away.

The six Republican senators who unleashed a manifesto last year questioning the basic tenets of meaningful use, HIPAA enforcement and even the efficacy of electronic health records are still hanging around Capitol Hill.
Indeed, their 27-page “Reboot” tract will form the basis for a closed-door meeting during next week’s National Health IT Week between the senators’ policy staffers and College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) members and leadership and policy experts.

Shellshock & Why EHRs Need Updating - InformationWeek

Shellshock & Why EHRs Need Updating

Nearly half of all security breaches occur in healthcare, and outdated medical records systems make data more vulnerable. An up-to-date EHR system can help solve security concerns, save money, and improve patient care.

Healthcare IT systems are ripe for security breaches. Medical records are especially data-rich, and thus are coveted in the circles within which stolen information is circulated. As a point of comparison, while the going rate for an illegally obtained credit card number is a few dollars, a stolen medical record can frequently be sold for upwards of $50.
