A grand farce — electronics health records

The Electronic Health Record has become required by government fiat. It has promised much – better care, better health, lower costs. About $24 billion in subsidies have been spent, with total costs in untold billions. The end result – a colossal boondoggle proving – beyond the shadow of a doubt – that health is not the end product of American medical care. Your health – physical, mental, social and spiritual – doesn’t have a chance against protected monopolistic profits.
Other countries don’t have this problem – go to Sweden, Britain, Norway. Electronic health records allow for rapid dissemination of information; national public health indices; cheap clinical trials; and the increased ability of administrators to figure out what works and what does not.
But those are also countries with far better health statistics than us – and with medical care that costs vastly less. Better results for far less money – who would ever want to copy that?

How to mitigate the revenue cycle impact of the ICD-10 delay

Author Name Jen Bresnick   |   Date October 20, 2014

October 1, 2014 was supposed to be the beginning of the ICD-10 era in the United States, but once again the industry is facing a new implementation date after Congressional action in April.  While the one-year delay does give some organizations a much-needed breathing space to ramp up testing, education, and systems conversion, others worry that the financial health of organizations that were ready to go this month will suffer due to the need to maintain readiness status for another twelve months.
How can healthcare organizations get prepared, stay prepared, and keep the coffers full during the next twelve months until 2015?

It is important that they obtain a clear view regarding ICD-10 and the features that distinguish it, as well as the government’s stand regarding its implementation.
Successful ICD-10 implementation demands considerable training and education for clinicians, coders and others within the healthcare fraternity that is associated with the revenue cycle. Flawless transition to the new coding system also requires specific and adequate documentation to ensure accurate medical coding. Many myths are rampant regarding ICD-10, and these must be driven out if you are to effect the transition smoothly. Here are some of the major myths doing the rounds and the actual facts.

Home Health Consultants: The Real Reason for ICD-10-CM

There have been delays…
Home health EMRs and other home health consultants are gearing up for ICD-10-CM. On January 16, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a regulation requiring the replacement of ICD-9 with ICD-10 as of October 1, 2013. In February 2013, HHS announced it was considering delaying the compliance date again due to feedback from the industry, including from the AMA. On September 5, 2013 HHS published a regulation that pushed back the compliance date one year to October 1, 2015, in part due to concerns about meeting the 2014 deadline given several other competing deadlines providers must meet.

ICD-10 Will Allow for Better Disease Tracking | All About Medical Billing & Coding

ICD-10 Will Allow for Better Disease Tracking

Although it may not be the first thing one thinks about when considering the job description for a medical billing and coding professional, this allied healthcare field currently plays a part in disease tracking- a role that will increase with the coming implementation of the ICD-10.
As alluded to in a previous article about about the billing and coding professional’s role in preventing a pandemic, public health officials have the capability of tracking diseases based on how they are classified and recorded in the medical record. Statistics on these classifications can be taken from insurance billing records or from a patient’s health record, which can be affected by a coding professional with access to a patient’s file.

Michael Orseno1. ICD-10. When signed into law in April, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 effectively delayed ICD-10 implementation until Oct. 1, 2015. Though the switch to the new code set will take place 10 months into the year, the ramifications make it one of the biggest changes to anticipate — the shift from approximately 14,000 ICD-9-CM codes to 68,000 ICD-10-CM codes is no small step to take. "It could take [ASCs] six months to a year to get up to speed," says Michael Orseno, revenue cycle director with Regent Surgical Health

Alleviating ICD-10 concerns

In my last article on ICD10 Watch, I discussed the idea of continuing the implementation of ICD-10-ready documentation systems.
I touched briefly on reasons to continue with ICD-10 implementation — mainly the ones keeping many physicians awake at night (other than patients calling or an overnight shift).
But what about some of the more subtle reasons that come from taking a proactive rather than reactive approach to clinical documentation and (may I say it?) the revenue cycle.
