Physicians continue to express dissatisfaction with the usability and the workflow features of electronic health records (EHRs), yet these information systems don’t seem to improve. One reason, experts say, is that vendors have poured most of their research and development budgets into meeting the requirements for meaningful use (MU) and the International Classification of Diseases-10th revision (ICD-10).

Ebola: How cloud, mHealth and ICD-10 could help
October 08, 2014 | Michael F. Arrigo - Managing partner, healthcare, No World Borders
Almost immediately after a patient infected with Ebola was found in the United States, the blame game began. First, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital blamed its EHR, Epic, and a faulty workflow. Then Epic refuted that and THP retracted its statement.
But the real question was never whether people or technology are to blame. Instead, what hospitals and public health officials need to be asking is: Now that the event occurred, how can we respond rapidly and how to prevent this from happening again?

However, President Obama in April signed legislation (HR 4302) that pushed back the ICD-10 compliance date until at least October 2015. CMS then released a final rule establishing Oct. 1, 2015, as the new ICD-10 compliance deadline.

ICD-10 Implementation Delay Gives Clinicians Time To Reduce Potential Headaches
Chicago—The mandatory implementation deadline for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) coding system has been moved back from Oct. 1, 2014, to Oct. 1, 2015, easing pressure on clinicians who have not yet started the change. But this may be the only opportunity to catch up. For clinicians who continue to delay, there is strong potential for chaos and perhaps lost income from a poorly planned transition.

Big changes affecting health care providers and members of the human services community are occurring and without preparation, many health care activities will be impacted. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), was released in May 2013 and adoption varies state by state. The switch to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10), code sets used to report clinical diagnoses and procedures will take place on October 1, 2015. The convergence of new diagnosis terms and codes presents unique challenges to managers in the behavioral health field.

Hangry? There's A Code For That - Fun With ICD Codes

To celebrate the newest version of ICD, which is supposedly coming soon (approximately a million years after every other developed nation implemented it), I scoured our EMR system to find some of my favorite codes. They range from "What in the world?!" to "But, WHY?" and sometimes, "Yup, I will totally use that code."

One-year countdown to ICD-10 begins: Start transition now

With just a year left to transition to the ICD-10 code set, practice management experts advise physicians to begin preparing for implementation by working with software vendors and testing their systems, if they haven’t already. See what physicians can use to make the switch to this costly code set a bit easier.
Originally scheduled for implementation in 2014, a final rule issued in August gave physicians an extra year to prepare for implementation of the costly code set, developed by the World Health Organization and adapted for use in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
