ICD-10: MS-DRG Validation Still a Priority
Written by Sandra Routhier, RHIA, CCS, AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer | Monday, 30 June 2014 20:00Given the recent extension of the ICD-10 compliance date, many hospitals are stepping back and re-evaluating project plans and timelines to use this time to improve their transition readiness.
Attention is being given to additional education and practice (i.e., dual coding) for coding professionals, increased clinical documentation improvement (CDI) efforts so that medical record documentation supports the specificity available in ICD-10, as well as investigating, implementing, and/or fine-tuning computer-assisted coding (CAC) technology. MS-DRG validation is another process to consider that may assist in the goal of achieving accurate inpatient reimbursement under ICD-10. If correct code and MS-DRG assignment isn’t happening now in ICD-9, chances are it won’t be happening in ICD-10 either.
